Letters Are Y-cumin In
I've gotten some more mail in the past couple of weeks, and I thought I'd share it
with you all. It's always good to hear from other members of the mustache camp, and
it reminds me that someone does actually reads this stuff, so I'd better shape up.
(And if any one can ID the poetic reference in the title, please let me know - I
can't get a good handle on where I got it from)
Encouraging Words from
a Vet
Our first missive comes from Scott of
AOL Land, who has positive thoughts about the Handlebar Concept:
Just wanted to wish you good luck on your handlebar mustache.
I've been reading your site for the past few weeks, since right after I
trimmed my beard of three years down to a fu manchu mustache (actually, it's more like
Wyatt Earp). Usually in the summer I trim it to a goatee, but it seems like
everybody's got a goatee these days, and you can be more creative with a mustache (well,
at least when you haven't had "just a mustache" before). I will
undoubtedly grow the beard back this winter, but the mustache has been fun.
As far as the handlebar, just be patient. I grew one with my beard a couple of years
ago. Why? Because I could. But truthfully, it not that bad. I no
longer have a handlebar (obviously), but even right now I keep my mustache longer than I
did before the handlebar, I just like the way it curls over my lip. Plus, if I
decide to go with a handlebar, I won't have to grow it out as long before I see results.
Scott
Thanks for reading , Scott. You're
not the only one who thinks that everyone has a goatee nowadays. I remember
back in the day when earrings for men just started becoming accepted, and everyone in the
world had one. You know a fashion has gone mainstream when you see guys in suits
going to work sorting the 'new look'. I had a goat when I got married, and when I
returned from my honeymoon I truncated it into a dashing Piazza. The handlebar is
coming along fine. It really seems to be behaving for the most part. I'm not
used to my whiskers being this long -- now my mustache gets 'bed head' in the morning,
too. Patience and understanding is the rule with the handlebar, people.
Wie gehts, Herr
Schnurrbart?
| The next communiqué is the
result of some research I was doing back in the July 12 Cookie Duster. In the
course of seeking out Mustache Presence on the Web, I ran across TexaStache's Mustachioed Friends,
and decided to write to Friend Konrad based on his Excellent Stache: |

Sr. Dali, eat your heart out.
|
| Konrad hails from Germany, and is a
member of a local Beard Club. Here's our conversation in a Q & A
format: Cookie Duster: What
other styles of mustache have you tried besides the "Dali"?
Konrad: I tried some other styles in the last times. The
"Dali" has two different styles. One Type is the Dali with the Ends up to the
Moon, like on the Pics. The second Type is with curved Ends to the sides of my nose. Now
the Stache is about 30 cm long.
A further Style is a Double circle on each side of the nose. The Base
is the same as the Dali-Style but there are the two closed circles. This looks very
funny and some of the people like it.
Another style is the "English". In this style, the Ends are
only styled horizontal outside with a little upside curve. This style looks very
elegant.
Since about four months ago I have an additional little goatee growing on my chin.
It looks like a musketeer. (Note: This is
the Doc Holliday style, and is not a full goatee - CD)
Cookie Duster: In the US,
having just a mustache is not "cool" right now (goatees are very popular).
Have mustaches ever been out of fashion in Germany?
Konrad: I think mustaches (especially styled mustaches)
are in Germany also very rare. But in my circle there are some good Staches. Here,
goatees and full beards are the most popular. Especially the full beards. In Germany there
are many historic people (like Kaiser Wilhelm etc.) they have for some people in this case
a function like a idol. So, I think we have more beards as any other nation worldwide. But
that is only my opinion.
Cookie Duster: Do you ever
feel prejudiced against because you have a mustache?
Konrad: I never felt a prejudice... since I was a
teenager, I have had a Mustache and I have never shaved my upper lip. Most of the
people here like my beard and I hear many good comments. Sometimes there is a
negative vote, but I think it is really normal. For me, the stache is like a calling card
or a sign. All my colleagues know me by my stache.
Cookie Duster: What is the
best part of having a mustache?
Konrad: I think the best part of having a mustache is the
big big fun with it and the reactions of the people on the streets. All over the
world the people see my mustache and they are laughing. Sometimes they laugh because
they think it is a funny thing and some people don´t like the stache. The best
moments of these are, when we are going with a group of long bearded man through town.
The people are sometimes very confused about this.
Cookie Duster: How do you
say 'Mustache' in German? I found
'Schnurrbart' in an online dictionary, but I was wondering if there are any other words
used for mustache.
Konrad: Schnurrbart is OK, but some people are using
"Schnauzbart" or "Schnorres" as meaning the same.
Konrad adds:
Now, I have to say, that my opinion is, that your web-Site is OK. I wish
you good luck for this project. Please visit our Web-Site on http:\\www.inosoft.de\bartclubmarburg (Note: This site is in full-on German - CD)
Viele Danke, Schnauzbartbrüder! |
Jet Lagged Farewell
And now
we return from our international Mustache Trip to the end of another Cookie Duster.
Come back next week for more important news and views about The Hair O'er the Lip.
Drop me a line with your questions, comments, or 'stache reports - XianRex@mustachesummer.com - and I'll make
you a star.
Thanks
again to Scott and Konrad for taking the time to share their Mustache Views with the rest
of us. Boys, now you are stars! I'm going to step out for a Schnitzel
with a side of Schnorres, so until next week, Make Mine Mustache!
